up and about

holiday
Morning all. I would like to take a moment out to say Happy Birthday to [info]babeofbryan  ! May you have a wonderful day!

It's dark, damp, and windy out there this morning. I need to check the forecast for later today. I will be taking a nice little walk to the park, rain or shine. I will bring my umbrella and camera.

The big tree out front made a very loud "POP!" noise. It has a crack in it's trunk that is getting rather wide. I'm sure with all this rain we have had over the last few weeks it is weakening. It may decide to split and fall. If it does, it may land on some part of this house. It wouldn't be the first tree to do that. We had a pine tree break off halfway down, and land on J's room. His mother's insurance doesn't cover for that. We'd be left with the bill for the repair. She knows about the condition of that tree. The man she had come here to give her and estimate to have it cut down gave her a price she didn't like. She couldn't afford it. I wonder which is more expensive, having the tree removed, or having to face a huge home repair? If it does hit the house, I just hope none of us gets hurt.

Time to check on the local news.

Tomato plants have been removed from stores in half a dozen Northeast states as a destructive plant disease makes its earliest and most widespread appearance ever in the United States.

Late blight -- the same disease that caused the Irish Potato Famine in the 1840s -- occurs sporadically in the Northeast, but this year's outbreak is more severe because infected plants have been widely distributed by big-box retail stores and rainy weather has hastened the spores' airborne spread.

Plants have been removed from stores throughout New England and New York. Late blight also has been identified in all other East Coast states except Georgia, as well as Alabama, West Virginia and Ohio.

A spokesperson for the New York State Agriculture and Markets Department told CBS 6 the department received its first report of tomato blight about a week ago -- much earlier than usual for the state to be seeing such cases.

The state is prepared to take regulatory action as soon as it gets a verifiable date, said Jessica Chittenden. In the meantime, the Cornell Cooperative Extension is taking reports of blight from farmers, consumers and retailers.

There is no public health risk, Chittenden emphasized. Tomato blight kills plants before they can bear fruit.

Symptoms include large olive-green or brown spots on the tops of leaves and white fungus underneath. Experts say home gardeners should destroy infected plants to prevent spores from spreading to commercial farms.

If you'd like to report tomato blight, contact your local Cornell University Cooperative Extension contact below:

The Park

holiday
I went for that little walk down to Shuttleworth Park. I guess the parkfest will be tomorrow, for today there is a couple baseball games going on. I saw a family having a cookout in one of the stone firepits sitting under one of the pavilions. I took some nice nature shots that I will place under a cut because I have more than two nice shots to show.

PIcs Under Here )

When I first came to this city I never knew this park existed. I came across it one day by accident just walking around the area. It's one of my favorite spots here.

Night Post

sleepy
Our friend called us to come over to his house for a cookout which was very nice of him. :) When we got back I had a nice long two hour nap.
Biscuit is hiding. She doesn't like the firecrackers going off in the neighborhood. Somewhere in a distance I hear big fireworks going off. It sounds like thunder. She has tucked herself between the recliner and couch. How she got in there is a mystery to me, but she got in there. I am up in my room, soon she will venture out and hide under my bed.
I am going to catch up on LJ and be off to sleep soon. I was up early again this morning, and my messed up sleep schedule is messing with me.
I hope everyone is having a good holiday weekend so far. Night all.
